|
Pop!_OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and developed by Sysetm76. The distribution's latest version is Pop!_OS 21.10 which includes initial support for Raspberry Pi computers. The release announcement shares other changes and features: "Previously when navigating to Applications, a full screen Application Wall would appear. In Pop!_OS 21.10, the Application Library opens in a small, searchable window over your current workspace. Like the former view, the Application Library can be opened from the top bar, a 4-finger swipe right on the trackpad, or by using Super + A on your keyboard. What this means for you: Better multi-monitor experience: The Application Library will launch on the display that has your mouse focus. This way, you can keep your eyes on your current workspace and launch the application on the display you intended. Easy scanning: Alphabetical listing makes it easier to scan and find the application or folder you want. Simple app organization: Drag and drop applications into custom folders. The new folders are always visible, and act like tabs to move between your personally organized applications. Search: Quickly filters your installed applications as well as apps available to install from the Pop!_Shop. Just the right size: Achieves the same information density while using much less space. The Application Library provides the optimal experience, especially on ultra-wide monitors." Pop!_OOS is available in Intel/AMD, NVIDIA, and Raspberry Pi editions. NEW • Distribution Release: Kaisen Linux 2.0 |

|
Kaisen Linux is a rolling release, Debian-based desktop distribution. the project has published Kaisen Linux 2.0 which moves the base to Debian's Testing (Bookworm) branch. The project has also dropped the LXDE interface for LXQt. "Kaisen is now based on Debian Bookworm (Debian 12), also justifying the version number change. Among the most important things done on this new release, a complete overhaul of the menu with new, nicer and more modern icons, simplification of the menu and removal of about 15 launchers among the basic commands (such as mount and umount for example), new implementation of Btrfs snapshot tools, new tools dedicated to Cloud engineers! Many new packages have been packaged for the distribution for this, software such as Terraform, Trivy, Kubernetes, k6, k9s... LXDE has been replaced by LXQt because it is more modern and more compatible with Kaisen configurations such as Conky (which is now unique for all interfaces). LXDE is still installable, but will no longer be provided by default via an ISO or installed via the net-install ISO. The kaisen-lxde metapackage will no longer be installable and will be removed from the repositories when Kaisen Linux is upgraded to 3.0. This will leave at least 1.5 years for users to migrate to another interface." Further details are available in the project's release announcement. "With the end of 2021 just around the corner, we are pushing out the last release of the year with Kali Linux 2021.4, which is ready for immediate download or updating. The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release is Tails 4.25 introduces a number of package updates for key components. It also features a backup utility to copy important files in persistent storage to a thumb drive. "We added a utility to make a backup of the Persistent Storage to another Tails USB stick. This utility automates the process described until now in our documentation on making a backup of your Persistent Storage, which used the command line. It's pretty basic and we still want to do something better in #7049, but we didn't want to wait more because we know that backups are a big issue for our users. External Hard Disk - we added a new entry called Tails (External Hard Disk) to the GRUB boot loader. Changes and updates: update Tor Browser to 11.0.2; update Tor to 0.4.6.8; add a shortcut to restart Tails when the Unsafe Browser was not enabled in the Welcome Screen; add a link from the error screen of the Tor Connection assistant to our documentation on troubleshooting connecting to Tor." Roberto Dohnert has announced the release of Freespire 8.0, the latest update of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the Xfce desktop. The new version continues to be based on Ubuntu's latest long-term support release, version 20.04: "Today, the PC/OpenSystems LLC FOSS development team has released Freespire 8.0, an update which delivers much needed system enhancements and security fixes. Once again we have let users decide; they have spoken and we have included all the most-requested Google services - Calendar, Docs and Gmail. For more traditional use cases, Freespire core has not changed at all - it's still a full-featured desktop OS, with all of the applications and resources of the Ubuntu repositories available as always. Freespire does not incorporate any proprietary media codecs and aside from Google Chrome, there are no other vendor-specific software applications pre-installed at all. Freespire 8.0 features a new stable kernel which fixes bugs and broadens hardware support. Google Chrome 96 includes security patches and other general browser improvements. We have upgraded Xfce 4.16, X11, Samba and other system fundamentals, including non-UEFI and secure boot systems." Here is the full release announcement with screenshots. The CentOS project has published a new snapshot release, CentOS 9 Stream which acts as a middle ground between Fedora and the next version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The project's release announcement says: "Updates posted to Stream are identical to those posted to the unreleased minor version of RHEL. The aim? For CentOS Stream to be as fundamentally stable as RHEL itself. To achieve this stability, each major release of Stream starts from a stable release of Fedora Linux—In CentOS Stream 9, this begins with Fedora 34, which is the same code base from which RHEL 9 is built. As updated packages pass testing and meet standards for stability, they are pushed into CentOS Stream as well as the nightly build of RHEL. What CentOS Stream looks like now is what RHEL will look like in the near future." CentOS is available in x86_64, ARM64, and PowerPC64 flavours. At the time of writing, the release notes are not yet available. Download: CentOS-Stream-9-latest-x86_64-dvd1.iso (8,037MB, pkglist). |
